Erasmus Supporting The Ukraine How European Education Builds Solidarity Through Mobility

When conflict disrupts education, mobility programmes become so much more than just academic opportunities. They become lifelines. Since the outbreak of war in The Ukraine, Erasmus+ has adapted its framework to ensure Ukrainian students, teachers and institutions are able to continue participating in international education. The programme has shifted from traditional mobility structures to flexible support mechanisms that prioritise safety, inclusion and educational continuity. For European schools and partners, Erasmus+ has become a platform for solidarity through learning.

How Erasmus+ Has Adapted to Support Ukraine

To respond to the Ukrainian crisis, Erasmus+ introduced special measures. These measures allow greater project management and participation flexibility, for example, there are emergency mobility opportunities for displaced students and simplified administrative procedures.  Additionally, Erasmus+ has allowed for increased funding use flexibility, support for hosting Ukrainian learners and staff and temporary project adjustment which comes without penalties. These changes allow institutions to react quickly while maintaining educational quality.

Support for Ukrainian Students and Teachers

Erasmus+ has ensured that thousands of Ukrainian students and educators are able to continue their studies or professional development through placements and exchanges. The programme supports temporary learning placements in EU countries, teacher training and professional development, language integration programmes and academic recognition of learning outcomes. The aforementioned helps reduce educational disruption and supports long-term reintegration into formal education systems.

Inclusion Measures and Financial Support

Erasmus+ places strong emphasis on inclusion when supporting displaced learners. The measures include extra financial support for vulnerable participants, simplified documentation requirements and flexibility in duration of mobilities.  Furthermore, measures also include adapted accommodation and welfare support. These mechanisms ensure participation remains accessible even under complex circumstances.
