Since 2014, the European Union has had a brilliant programme offering the opportunity to complete a supported work placement abroad. This is already well-known by Europeans and is called the Erasmus+ programme. With Britain's exit from the European Union, there is now a new programme for its residents, called the Turing Scheme. A key decision for an Erasmus+ or Turing internship is the destination. In our latest blog series, different countries are highlighted and we list exciting cities for a possible Erasmus+ or Turing stay. The first blog in this series is about Germany and its most popular destinations for an Erasmus+ or Turing internship.

 

Berlin

The cosmopolitan city of Berlin impresses with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, but it also has plenty of history. This city is where the most prestigious universities in the country are located. The work possibilities of an Erasmus+ or Turing adventures are almost unlimited because almost every professional sector in Berlin is able to carry out one of these types of internships. We should particularly mention design, marketing and media as these types of internships are available at the Häufe in Berlin. There are also various business roles.

In Berlin, it is an advantage to speak German for an Erasmus+ or Turing internship but English is spoken and acceptable in many companies. Another important point in deciding on your destination is financing. Berlin is affordable. The usual accommodation for an Erasmus+ or Turing project in Berlin is apartments, or hotels. Public transport is well-developed and offers the opportunity to get from one end of the city to the other end very quickly.

 

Munich

Many companies in the automotive and electronics industries are located in Munich. Munich Airport also offers numerous opportunities for an Erasmus+ or Turing internship, in the transport sector. Transport on the subway, the trams and buses offer numerous options. However, Munich is one of the more expensive cities in Germany, but thanks to the excellent funding of an Erasmus+ or Turing project; this destination can be affordable.

 

Frankfurt

Did you know that Frankfurt is also referred to as the banking city of Germany? In Frankfurt you’ll find Germany’s only skyline! There are more than 30 skyscrapers which are all perceived as the city’s landmarks. Frankfurt Airport is the largest German airport and the fourth largest European airport. In your free time, a visit to the enchanting old town of Frankfurt is highly recommended and a great way to relax after a working day. From a financial point of view, Frankfurt is a bit more expensive, but still affordable with the help of Erasmus+ or Turing funding.

 

Hamburg

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany with a population of just under 2 million people. Hamburg is an important industrial location and ideally suited for an Erasmus+ or Turing project. The Portof Hamburg, the airport and the railway station are among the largest logistics locations in Germany. For the technical and economic sectors, Hamburg is an excellent destination to undertake an Erasmus+ or Turing internship. After work, the many restaurants or bars on the water – in the Hafen or on various beaches – offer plenty of opportunities to relax. In fact, there’s a real holiday feeling to Frankfurt!
