When people talk about Erasmus+ experiences, they often share the highlights, new friends, exciting trips and unforgettable memories. However, the truth is that every mobility also has its low points! Homesickness, culture shock, or even doubts about belonging can hit hard. The difference lies in how students overcome those moments and how those struggles often turn into the most powerful lessons of all. Here are 3 alumni stories that show how Erasmus+ challenges can turn into incredible comebacks.

1. The Homesickness Hurdle

The Challenge: Anna, a 17-year-old from Poland, arrived in Spain full of excitement but after the first week, she felt completely alone and missed her family so much she considered going home.

The Comeback: With the support of her welfare coordinator and new international classmates, she started joining group dinners and cultural local events. Within weeks, she built friendships that lasted long after her mobility. Anna says, The day I almost gave up was the day I grew the most.”

 2. The Workplace Setback

The Challenge: Markus, a vocational student from Germany, faced difficulties adapting to the different work practices in an Italian company. At first, he felt lost and even made mistakes doing his tasks.

The Comeback: Instead of giving up, he asked for extra guidance from his supervisor and collaborated closely with local colleagues. That effort paid off! Not only did he improve his performance, but he also gained new professional skills and techniques that he later shared with his peers back in Germany.

3. The Language Wall

The Challenge: Sofia, from Greece, felt paralysed in France because her French was basic. Ordering food or asking for directions became stressful.

The Comeback: She turned this frustration into motivation, setting herself a challenge to learn 3 new phrases every day. By the end of her stay, she was leading conversations. “I realised mistakes weren’t failures, they were lessons,” she reflects.
