Perhaps you’ve just returned from an amazing trip abroad through the Erasmus+ scheme (or the British equivalent, The Turing Scheme)? Maybe you are excited to see your family and friends from home, but you also want to remember everything you’ve experienced while on your mobility! No doubt, you’ve had the time of your life and often it’s hard to slip back into old routines, especially when you’ve been used to more independence and a different way of life! You definitely don’t want to forget your new friends, your extraordinary journey, your university or workplace while abroad and everything you’ve done during your time away. As experts in work and study placements in Europe and beyond, TravelEdventures’ knows how to keep those memories forever, here are our top tips to cement them in your mind.
1. Keep a Diary
If you’ve come home, this might be difficult, but you could write your memories down every time they spring into your mind. If you’re still away or you’re about to go on your work/study placement abroad, take a diary with you and write a page-a-day (there’s no rule, you could write more or less than a page) so you remember all those important things that signify what a tremendous experience you’ve had!
2. Social Media – The Obvious!
Social media is of course, the obvious way of keeping those memories alive. Whether it’s following accounts related to your experience (including adding new friends and acquaintances) or perhaps you could set up a group for all of the people you met? Encourage your Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme friends to post snippets of memories and photographs, get tagging and keep the conversation going.
3. Photographs
With today’s technology, there’s no excuse not to have a camera roll full of photographs and videos. Why not download them and create a photobook to capture all your experiences? You can add captions to remind you of where you were and what you did, even make it a photographic diary! Or get technical and design a video montage of all of your clips so you have everything to hand. Share these with other Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme friends.
4. Create a Memory Box
When you get home, get a wooden box (or shoe box or similar), decorate it with things related to your trip and fill it with memories. Things like ticket stubs, brochures, leaflets, photographs, notes, pebbles, shells from a beach – anything that fits inside. All your memories will be kept safe and whenever you want to refer to your trip, just open it up and the memories will quickly come flooding back to you!
5. Gather Audio Recordings
If you have some from your time abroad, then save them together in a folder but if not, encourage your new Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme friends to record snippets of information and memories from your trip. You can do the same, whenever you remember something, record it so you never forget your experiences!
6. Scrapbook Your Memories
Rather like the Memory Box idea above, stick memorable information and items into a scrapbook so you have everything together in one, handy place. Read it whenever you want to remind yourself of your work or study placement abroad.
7. The Meet-Up
There’s nothing better to conjure up old memories than meeting up with the people you shared them with. So, have a goal – arrange a group meet-up in one of your friends’ (or your own) countries. Or go back to where you had your placement with all your buddies! Not only will you further cement relationships but you’ll also have a great catch-up opportunity and might even unearth memories you’ve forgotten!
