Lucky you! You’re off to spend the Winter months in sunny Malta on a study placement through the Erasmus+ EU work/study scheme and you’re even luckier if you’re doing it in partnership with TravelEdventures! Perhaps you’re staying in our very own hostel, nestled in a beautiful part of Malta giving you easy access to the University of Malta and other colleges? If so, then take advantage of the amazing facilities, cleanliness, security and comfort that we provide our students. Staying with us means you’ll quickly make new friends too, friendships that will last you a lifetime and you’ll also get to indulge yourself in all that Malta has to offer, from sunshine to surf, delicious food, friendly locals and as one of the safest places on earth, you’ll never feel intimidated when you’re out and about on your own.

Yes, a Winter semester in Malta has a lot of amazing benefits for students and once you’re booked on your Erasmus+ experience, it’s time to turn your head to what you should bring with you. We’ll give you a few pointers below but remember, Malta has supermarkets and many shops so if you forget anything, don’t worry, you’ll be able to get what you need while you’re there.

  • Learning Agreement, Student Card, Passport, Insurance and EU Medical Card

Take copies of your Learning Agreement with you. You’ll also need any formal documents including a copy of your insurance schedule, your passport, student ID card and your EU Medical Card in case you need medical care.

  • Lightweight Clothing

The weather will be warm – not hot, so you don’t need sweaters and coats although we would suggest light jackets certainly for the evening, and some lighter knits on breezy days. Do take T-shirts jeans, sweatpants, casual trousers, skirts, dresses, and some smarter clothing too. There will be parties and get-togethers so take suitable clothing for these events. Bring some swimwear too, the weather can be nice enough for a dip in the sea and if you like to work out, bring your gym gear!

  • Electronics

You’ll need your laptop or Mac. Remember to bring suitable adaptors for your plug points, your hairdryer and any other electricals you take with you. You might want to buy a local sim card or phone while you’re in Malta to avoid any charges from your mobile provider.

  • Stationery

Take pens, paper, pencils and textbooks you think you’ll need. Remember, you won’t have much luggage allowance so bear this in mind. It might be better to enquire as to what books you do need to bring with you rather than turn up with 10kg worth of textbooks! Speak to your Erasmus+ representative and get them to check what you need/don’t need to bring with you.

  • Toiletries

Don’t overload yourself with too many toiletries as this will weigh your baggage down. Bring enough for a week (including a travel detergent for washing) – the rest you can buy in Malta, there are plenty of supermarkets and shops as mentioned before.

  • Towels and Bed Linen

Depending on where you stay, bed linen may be included and perhaps your towels too, but many students like to bring their own with them.

  • Kitchenware

If you stay in an apartment or a student dorm you may need to bring some kitchenware, such as plates, cups, cutlery, a saucepan. Remember, you can buy these items while you’re in Malta, so don’t fret too much if your luggage is quite literally weighing you down!

  • Money and Credit Card

Do take money with you, some cash so you have spending money when you arrive. We always suggest bringing a credit card but only for emergency use and not to be used to spend whenever you want – you’ll end up with a huge amount to clear when you return. A debit card is best, along with some cash as mentioned already.

  • Medication

If you’re on medication, take it with you as it will be harder to get hold of while you’re in Malta. Take prescriptions if necessary, so you can get items made up at a pharmacy but it’s best to have sufficient medicine for the duration of your stay. Do pack a small First Aid kit as well, just in case!

  • Comfortable Shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of exploring, especially if you’re travelling with TravelEdventures. Comfortable shoes are a must – a good pair of trainers, suitable shoes for the evening, flipflops if you go to the beach and an everyday pair of shoes too. Again, don’t pack multiple pairs, you’ll get plenty of opportunity to go shopping while you’re in Malta.
