What Insurance Do You Need for an Erasmus+ Winter Semester Abroad?

If you’re lucky enough to be travelling to a different country for an Erasmus+ study placement this winter 2024/25, then no doubt you’ll be extremely excited about what lays ahead. As well as forging fantastic friendships that will last a lifetime, having the time of your life in a new destination and learning, you’ll improve your future employability giving your career the boost you’ll be so grateful for!  At TravelEdventures, we specialise in Erasmus+ (and Turing Scheme) trips in Europe and beyond.  We’ll do almost all the planning for you – but one vital ingredient to ensure a smooth-running trip is insurance. 

The last thing you want to do is be caught short and without adequate insurance in place, you could lay yourself open to problematic situations.  From losing your luggage to a major health emergency, you must make sure you have insurance in place.  Luckily for you, we deal with many fantastic insurance agencies that operate in almost every European country.  So, no matter where you’re travelling from, if you’re going to another country this winter, such as our brand-new winter semester in Malta, for an Erasmus+ study placement – here’s some useful information to bear in mind. 

A Credit Card With Insurance Will Not Suffice

Even if you have a credit card (which we suggest but to only use in cases of absolute emergencies), the card won’t have enough cover for you.  It may cover one, two or three months of insurance but we recommend you check the small print and take time to really think about the level of cover you might need. From losing your money to valuables, to needing hospital treatment, medication or even in the worse possible case scenario, an airlift home, you must be covered properly. 

What About Group Insurance? 

 We don’t offer a group insurance policy because actually, these end up being more expensive believe it or not.  All interns must arrange insurance for themselves.  There are no groups. 

Get A European Health Insurance Card 

 You should also organise your European Health Insurance Card which gives you immediate necessary treatment from your destination country’s healthcare system.  It covers every EU country with the addition of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Get your card organised by clicking here. 

Are there Any Particular Insurance Benefits My Insurance Should Cover?

Yes, we suggest that you get cover for medical, liability and accidents.  Also look at your money cover – if your money gets stolen or is subject to fraudulent activity, ask yourself if you have sufficient insurance cover to replenish what might lose. 

How Does Erasmus+ Know If I Have Insurance In Place?

You won’t be able to travel without insurance in place.  You’ll be asked to give proof of valid insurance and there will likely be spot checks to make sure you are covered.  Don’t leave home without it! 

How Do I Submit an Insurance Claim? 

 We will use a medical insurance reason as an example.  If you require medical treatment, you’ll go to the hospital or doctor’s office.  You should keep copies of all invoices and anything else such as medical reports etc.  Once you’ve completed your treatment, send us your documents and we will submit a report, then pass all papers over to the relevant insurers.  Your case will be carefully assessed and then you should be paid out, as long as your insurance is valid and covers the problem.  There will be a TravelEdventures’ representative wherever you’re travelling to who will help you.  Do make sure that you submit your report early enough – late submissions might mean you don’t get your pay-out. 

What Insurance Do I Really Need?

Medical (hospital care, doctor care, medication, airlift, critical care etc.).  Financial and valuables (in case of loss or theft), luggage (in case of loss).
