crumpled paper and traveling around the world as concept

So, you’ve decided you want to do a work or study placement abroad through the EU’s Erasmus+ scheme, or the UK’s Turing Scheme.  That’s terrific news, but where will you go to?  There are so many incredible European cities that await you – but if your budget is key, then you may want to opt for the less expensive European cities.  In this piece, we’ll give you the top cheapest cities for an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme Adventure to help you make that all-important decision.  Let’s dive in.

1. Slovenia

Traditionally, Northern and Eastern Europe are the cheapest countries to live and work in.  Slovenia is right next to Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Italy giving you plenty of opportunity to visit other places during your placement abroad.  Renting a room costs around EUROS 200 per month, whereas sharing a dorm costs around EUROS80 which is very cheap.  Student transport is around EUROS12 and eating out is as low as EUROS10.  Expect to spend around EUROS500.

2. Croatia

Becoming more and more popular – Croatia is an idyllic place to visit and gets really hot in the summer.  With stunning blue sea (but pebbly beaches), choose Croatia for culture, history and beautiful coastline.  Zagreb is as cheap as around EUROS100 to 200 per calendar month and eating out can be extremely inexpensive.  For example, if you study at the university, you could enjoy a hearty meal for just EURO1!  Expect to spend around EUROS500 per calendar month on your expenses if you choose Croatia as your destination for an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme work/study placement abroad.

3. The Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is one of the least expensive countries to travel to and live in.  Prague, the capital is a stunning city with lots to offer students and learners.  Apart from its rich and colourful history, cobbled streets, cathedrals and castles, it’s low-cost for students, with plenty of discounts to take advantage of.  Expect to spend anything from EUROS400 to EUROS600 per calendar month on everything you need, accommodation in a shared apartment or student residence costs from EUROS150 to EUROS250 in the centre – giving you plenty of extra money to use to eat and relax.

4. Portugal

The sunny country of Portugal brings you history, culture, sea and sand – and despite being in Southern Europe, it is very affordable for students and young people seeking a work or study placement abroad.  This small, compact country boasts beautiful beaches and coastline, and is well-positioned for visiting other neighbouring countries too.  Expect to spend around EUROS500 per calendar month depending on the area you choose.  The most popular areas for students are Porto and Lisbon, as they are major cities.  In Porto, you can find good accommodation for around EUROS250 to 300 per month.  Food, fun and leisure activities will probably cost around EUROS200 per month, so while Portugal is a little more expensive than the other countries on this list, it’s still a very affordable place to work, live and study.
