the nice City of budapest

Choosing a destination for your Erasmus+ mobility can feel like an impossible task! After all, the EU’s work and study placement scheme for students and learners gives access to a multitude of incredible cities and so many European countries to explore. Plus, as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you want to find somewhere that ticks all of your boxes. We’ll help you find the ideal Erasmus+ destination for your placement – and one of the city’s we can’t wait to tell you all about is Budapest in Hungary.

This Eastern European city is an abundance of incredible history and culture. The capital of Hungary, it has plenty to offer students and as it’s so affordable, it’s no wonder that students from the EU flock to this vibrant city to participate in an Erasmus+ mobility.

A Very Affordable Erasmus+ Destination

Firstly, it’s good to know that Budapest is extremely affordable. Expect to spend approximately 500 Euros per month on living costs. Rent is around the 175 Euros mark – but remember to change up your currency as Hungary doesn’t accept Euros, their national currency is the Hungarian Forint or HUF. Check the exchange rate as it fluctuates, but as a guide, 1 Euro = 360 HUF. As with any Erasmus+ destination, we’d recommend finding your accommodation before you arrive in Budapest to avoid any pitfalls.

The River Danube Splits Budapest In Two

Did you know that Budapest is split into two areas, with the Danube running in-between. On one side is Buda which is quieter and mainly the residential area and on the other side is Pest. Pest is where you want to go to experience life in Budapest. It’s full of restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping – so when you want to socialise that’s where you need to head out! We’d recommend a very famous bar that’s set in the midst of historic Hungarian ruins called Szimpla Kert, definitely make time for a few visits.

How to Get Involved and Meet New People in Budapest

Don’t worry about meeting new people in Budapest. You’ll soon feel at home and while Hungarian isn’t widely spoken outside of the country, if you have basic English skills you’ll get by and be able to improve too as most people speak English. You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to meet students just like you through your partner university. There’s a lot of parties and get-togethers so you’ll get involved.

What About the Culture?

You can’t visit Budapest and not enjoy what the city has to offer culturally. Apart from many museums and art galleries, there are plenty of street festivals too. If you’re lucky enough to enjoy your Erasmus+ mobility during March, you’ll take part in the Independence Day celebrations and just one month later, there’s the Budapest Spring Festival, everyone gets involved!

The city is also home to some extraordinary churches, such as the St Stephen’s Basilica and you have to admire the Hungarian Parliament Building. There’s also Heroes Square and Buda Castle as well as the Szechenyi Chain Bridge to name a few.

What to Eat in Budapest

As for the food – if you like big portions, you’re in the right place! Do try the traditional cuisine on offer, such as Goulash which is ideal if you’re in Budapest during the wintertime as it’s a hearty soup. Also try Langos (deep fried flatbread), Palacsinta (pancakes) and Kuroskalaks (a sweet dessert cake) but if you want other cuisines, there’s plenty of choice as Budapest is a major city with a treasure trove of restaurants.
