# Six Languages, 34 Cities and those Moments that Improve Student Fluency – Discover Our Beyond Borders Programme

Ask anyone who speaks a second language when it finally clicked and they rarely mention a grammar test! They possibly talk about a bakery in Lyon, a bus driver in Dublin or maybe a stallholder in Seville who waited patiently while they hunted their memory for the Spanish word for “peach!” That moment, when textbook language suddenly works in real life is exactly what Beyond Borders is built around.

What Is Beyond Borders?

Beyond Borders is exclusive to TravelEdventures, a language immersion programme for schools, colleges and student groups. The idea is simple, instead of only learning *about* the country where a language is spoken, students go and actually learn the language *in* that country.

Each programme combines professional lessons with qualified teachers and the best classroom of all, daily life. Students live in the destination, explore its culture and use the language day-to-day, from breakfast to bedtime, in cafés, markets, museums and having conversations with locals.

Beyond Borders in Numbers

- **6 languages:** English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
- **10 countries**, from Ireland to Cyprus.
- **34 fabulous destinations** to choose from.
- **Up to 100%** of costs covered through Erasmus+ funding where eligible.

Choose a Language and then Choose a City

Every destination has its own way of teaching. Here’s a taste of what that could look like:

*🇪🇸 Spanish: Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Seville*

*The mission:* Buy the ingredients for a paella at Valencia’s Mercado Central and explain to the stallholder what you’re cooking. Or order a full round of tapas for the group in Seville, no pointing allowed!

*Did you know that* *Spanish is the second most spoken native language in the world, with around 500 million native speakers?*

*🇫🇷 French: Paris, Nice, Lyon, Montpellier*

*The mission:* Win over a Parisian boulanger. Ask for a recommendation, order and say thank you before the queue becomes impatient!

*Did you know that French is the official language in around 29 countries, across five continents?*

*🇩🇪 German: Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Ulm, Vienna, Salzburg, Steyr*

*The mission:* Climb the 768 steps of Ulm Minster, the tallest church steeple in the world and describe the view in German at the top. Out of breath counts as authentic!

*Did you know that German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union?*

*🇮🇹 Italian: Rome, Florence, Milan, Bologna*

*The mission:* Ask a gelato maker in Florence for their favourite flavour and understand the answer. Then learn the names of five pasta shapes from a local in Bologna.

*Did you know that piano, allegro, crescendo and soprano all come from the language of music, Italian, so most students already know more of it than they think.*

*🇵🇹 Portuguese: Lisbon, Porto, Faro*

*The mission:* Get across Lisbon by tram, asking locals for directions along the way.

*Did you know that Portuguese is an official language in nine countries on four continents?*

*🇬🇧 English: Ireland, Malta, the United Kingdom and Cyprus*

*The mission:* Strike up a conversation with a street musician in Galway’s Latin Quarter or tackle a punting tour in Cambridge where you’ll need to understand instructions fast!

*Did you know that in Malta, English shares official status with Maltese, the only Semitic language that is an official language of the EU?*

Small Missions= Big Growth

On paper, these are fun activities. In practice, each one quietly builds something. Ordering for the group builds **confidence**. Finding your way across a new city builds **independence**. Helping a classmate find the right word builds **teamwork**. Working out why a joke didn’t land builds **cultural awareness**. Teachers often notice the change before the students do. The student who never spoke in class becomes the one who suddenly orders for the whole table. The group that relied on instructions starts planning its own route. The language stops being a subject and becomes a tool.

What’s Included and How to Fund It

A typical Beyond Borders programme includes lessons with qualified teachers, cultural activities and guided excursions along with carefully selected accommodation (host families, residences or hotels). It also includes learning objectives aligned with the school’s curriculum and 24/7 support throughout the stay. Everything is tailored to the group’s age, level and goals.

If budget becomes an obstacle, it may not need to be. Beyond Borders programmes are fully compatible with Erasmus+ and for some projects up to 100% of costs are covered. We support schools through the whole process, from the initial idea and the funding application through to preparing participants plus the final report.

*Fluency isn’t built in a classroom, it’s built in moments students remember forever*, like the first time someone answers them in their new language and the conversation simply keeps going.
