South of France Summer Festivals for Erasmus Students

For Erasmus+ students based in Spain or Southern France, one of the biggest advantages is how easy it is to travel between Mediterranean cities by train. Destinations such as Montpellier, Avignon and Marseille become ideal weekend escapes filled with music, culture and fabulously fun summer events. Between June and August, Southern France hosts some of Europe’s most vibrant public celebrations. Many events are free, happen outdoors and attract large student and international communities. For students on mobility in Barcelona or nearby regions, these festivals are often only a few hours away so make for the perfect day trip or weekend away. We’ve picked out several exciting events to try - so read on.

1. Fête de la Musique - Across Southern France

📍 Montpellier, Marseille, Nice & Avignon 📅 21 June 2026

The Festa Major de Gràcia is one of Barcelona’s most creative festivals. Streets throughout the Gràcia neighbourhood compete to create elaborate themed decorations using handmade materials, lights and artistic installations. During the festival, there are abundant outdoor concerts, open-air parties, delicious local food stalls and mesmerising street performances. As Gràcia is one of Barcelona’s most student-oriented neighbourhoods, the atmosphere feels relaxed, artistic and highly international during the celebrations.

2. Festival d’Avignon

📍 Avignon, France 📅 Approximately 4–25 July 2026

The Festival d’Avignon is one of Europe’s most important performing arts festivals. During July, the historic city fills with actors, musicians and artists from around the world. Students visiting Avignon during the festival will enjoy open-air theatre performances and live music in historic squares. There are also street artists, particularly in the old town and cultural events that go on late into the evening. As Avignon is easily reachable by train from Montpellier and Barcelona, it has become a very popular cultural weekend trip for Erasmus+ students.

3. Bastille Day Celebrations - Southern France

📍 Montpellier, Marseille & Nice 📅 14 July 2026

France’s national holiday, Bastille Day (“Fête Nationale”), is one of the country’s largest public celebrations. Throughout Southern France, students can join in the festivities and witness huge firework displays, outdoor concerts and public dances as well as events near beaches and waterfronts. The squares are always lively, packed with locals and visitors who want to take part in the national holiday. In Nice and Marseille especially, the Mediterranean coastline creates an incredible atmosphere during evening celebrations.

4. Delta Festival - Marseille

📍 Prado Beaches, Marseille 📅 23–26 July 2026

The Delta Festival has become one of Southern France’s biggest summer festivals and one of the most popular events among university and Erasmus+ students. Held directly on the Prado beaches in Marseille, the festival combines electronic music and live concerts, beach parties and sunset events plus an array of sporting activities and cultural workshops. There’s also a huge international student atmosphere because the event attracts thousands of young people every summer and creates a very energetic atmosphere on the Mediterranean coast. As Marseille is so well connected by train to Montpellier and Barcelona, many Erasmus+ students travel to the area specifically for this summertime festival.

5. Les Estivales de Montpellier - Montpellier

📍 Montpellier, France 📅 Fridays during July and August 2026

Les Estivales is one of Montpellier’s most popular summer events. Every Friday evening during summer, the historic centre hosts open-air markets, food stalls, local wine tastings and live music. Students often gather in Place de la Comédie to enjoy concerts, DJ sets and outdoor social events. You can experience local food, regional products and soak up the warm summer evenings in the city-centre. The atmosphere is relaxed and highly social, making it ideal for international students.
