Without doubt, one of the biggest fears for students travelling on an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme mobility abroad is the language barrier. Common thoughts include, “what if I can’t understand?” or “What if people laugh at my accent?”
Don’t worry though - you’re not alone, and the good news? You don’t need to be fluent in success! In fact, Erasmus+ or the Turing Scheme are both the perfect chance to pick up a new language quickly - if you approach it with the right mindset.
Here are 3 fun language hacks that our students swear by!
1. The “Phrase of the Day” Challenge
The Fear: “I’ll never learn enough words.”
The Hack: Start small. Every day, learn and use just one new phrase in real life. For example, it could be just ordering food, asking directions, or greeting classmates. By the end of just one month, you’ll have 30 useful expressions you actually use, not just memorise!
2. The Buddy System
The Fear: “Locals won’t have patience for my mistakes.”
The Hack: Pair up with a local, a work colleague or another Erasmus+/Turing Scheme student and practice informally. Swap your languages; 10 minutes speaking in their language, 10 minutes in yours. This keeps it fun and pressure-free while doubling learning.
3. Turn Entertainment into Learning
The Fear: “Language study feels boring.”
The Hack: Watch TV, listen to music, or play video games in your host language. Subtitles and repetition make it easier than you think and you’ll subconsciously pick up words and phrases. Students say they learn slang, expressions and real pronunciation faster this way than in any classroom.
Erasmus+ Language FAQs
Q: Do students need strong language skills before going abroad?
A: Not at all. The placements act as a learning tool. Support is always available if you need it.
Q: What if students feel shy speaking?
A: Mistakes are part of the process. Encouragement and group activities are a good way of “naturally” practicing.
Q: Are formal courses included?
A: Many mobilities offer local language classes, but real progress happens in daily life.
TravelEdventures Tip!
Don’t treat language like a test, treat it like a game. Encourage your students (or yourself, if you’re a student) to collect phrases, share them in groups and celebrate every small win. With the right support, Erasmus+ turns language barriers into a bridge.
Language shouldn’t be scary. With Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme, it’s a skill you build every day without even noticing!
