6 Signs You Need to Go On an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme

Written by Emma Crossick | June 3, 2025

If you’ve never heard of Erasmus+ before (or it’s British equivalent, the Turing Scheme) then you could be missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime!  Both programmes are especially for work and study placements abroad, and Erasmus+ focusses on most of Europe while the Turing Scheme allows British students to travel to countries all over the world.  Both programmes are affiliated with all the best universities, colleges, schools and other higher education institutions and courses are recognised qualifications, valued by future employers.  Just by stumbling across this article could be a sign that you need to undertake an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme mobility abroad – find out some more below.

1. You Love to Travel

Maybe deep in your heart you’re a traveller and you enjoy visiting new places, whether it’s a beach location or a bustling capital city, perhaps you prefer lush green countryside?  It doesn’t matter which is your preference (if any) because Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme both give you a extraordinary chance to sample one, or all of the above.

2. You’ve Never Travelled Before

It could be that you’ve never travelled outside of your home country before but you’re desperate to sample another place and experience a different culture?  The beauty of Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme is that hundreds of thousands of students and learners (who’ve never left their country before) have finally found themselves travelling abroad, seeing new things, making new friends and immersing themselves into a brand new (albeit temporary) way of life.  That could be you too!

3. You Think You Can’t Afford It!

Think again – because there are grants available with extra funding for disadvantaged and disabled students.  Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme aren’t restricted, in fact, they’re entirely inclusive and you can access a really generous grant that pays for much of your trip.

4. You Worry About Future Employment

Well, with an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme qualification under your belt, you needn’t worry!  Did you know that Erasmus+ students are less likely to experience long-term employment?  This is because employers really like to see international experience on a CV!

5. You’d Like to Have a Foreign Language

Going on an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme placement will finely-tune your language skills. So, if you’re studying French, German, English or any other language and you want to perfect it, a work or study placement in the country where your desired language is spoken will work perfectly for you!

6. You Want to Better Your Qualifications

Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme are higher education courses that are internationally recognised, and if you do travel on one of these placements, then you will bolster your qualifications’ list, and this could help you go onto post-degree education too (as well as improve your employability).
