Deciding on where to take your group on an Erasmus+ or Turing Scheme study placement can be a minefield, there are just so many incredible destinations in Europe (and beyond, if you’re a British school, college or university). If sunny Spain, with its white beaches and azure sea is of interest, then why not consider the vibrant capital city, Madrid? It’s got something for every type of student and it’s full of history, culture, fabulous landmarks, delicious food – and we can’t fail to mention the city’s friendly people.
1. Amazing Universities
Madrid is home to some of the world’s finest universities, colleges and other higher education institutions. The Completense University of Madrid is renowned for its international programmes ((ranked 95th in the world for humanities), and you will soon meet other people just like you, choosing to study in Spain. The international programme at the university is partnered with 77 countries, and over 900 institutions. There’s also the Saint Louis University amongst others. Plus, the universities in the city offer a plethora off courses, from arts to humanities to science and technology too – offering something for every type of student. For those students looking for vocational training, there’s the Fundacion Universitaria San Pablo.
2. It’s Relatively Affordable
For a city in Western Europe, Madrid isn’t as expensive as places like London, Paris, Rome, Copenhagen or Oslo, for example. Students can expect to spend anything from EUROS 900 to 1,300 on monthly expenses, including accommodation. Of course, if you’re very close to the centre of the city, accommodation will be more expensive. Offset this by choosing accommodation slightly further out (and use the student discount on travel), or let TravelEdventures organise your accommodation, we’ll get the best deals in the best places, near to universities and colleges.
3. Fantastic Social Opportunities
Students love to party, and Madrid is ideal! There’s just so much to do, especially for young people. Wherever you choose to study, there will be activities, clubs and social events to participate in, plus when you choose TravelEdventures to organise your Erasmus+ trip to Madrid, we’ll make sure there’s a full itinerary to get you involved and meet other people. Every where you turn there’s another square to explore, with cafés spilling out onto busy pavements. There are numerous parks too, such as the El Retiro park (designed in 1868 for the Spanish royal family) and the Royal Botanic Gardens in the centre (home to more than 5,000 species of plants and flowers) to name a couple worth visiting. Nightlife is excellent, there’s the Spanish tradition of tapas and Flamenco (don’t miss a Flamenco show while in the city) and lots of clubs and bars to choose from, you won’t be bored while living in Madrid! A good recommendation is Klub Kapital which has no less than 5 different floors to explore.
4. Improve Your Spanish Skills
Spanish is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world and is the mother tongue for 427 million people. Learning Spanish will really benefit you for future employability, and it’s a beautiful language too. So, brush up on your Spanish by spending an extended period of time studying in Madrid, and if you really want to enhance your Spanish speaking, enrol in a language course (there may be one available at your university or college). Living in a Spanish-speaking country will boost language proficiency no end.
5. Visit Other Fascinating Locations in Spain
As Madrid is so well-connected by rail especially, there’s every opportunity to visit other places in Spain, from the pretty shores of holidaymakers’ favourite, Costa Blanca to the Basque country. You could also take a train to Barcelona, explore Malaga, spend a weekend in Toledo or travel slightly further afield to Seville, and savour the beauty of the countryside as well as the many historical cities.
