If you’ve never been to London, England, then you have to consider this buzzing city as an option for an Erasmus+ work or study placement. London has something to offer everyone, from history dating back to the stone age to a vibrant nightclub and bar scene, ideal for students. Of course, London is often referred to as a centre for fashion and culture – with theatreland in the middle of the Soho district and an abundance of museums and art galleries to browse. While the aforementioned is enough good reason to choose visiting London for an extended period of time, here are more reasons why this incredible city could be perfect for you!
1. London is Home to Many Exceptional Universities and Colleges
Whether you’re a vocational student or you’re pursuing a degree, there’s somewhere for you to study in London. It’s famed for LSE (London School of Economics), the University of London, the University of Westminster and there’s the London College of Fashion too (amongst many others). Plus, central London is just over an hour away from prestigious universities Cambridge and Oxford.
2. London is a Melting Pot of Nationalities and Cultures
Of course, London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, a melting pot of nationalities, cultures and religions. If you want to try different cuisines, meet people from interesting backgrounds and see a thriving community consisting of all different walks of life – then London is ideal. It’s welcoming too, which only adds to its appeal.
3. London is For Students
London is for all ages but especially young people! There are so many places to visit – for thrift, go to Camden Market where you’ll pick up some vintage clothes, accessories, home furnishings and more. You could also head to Spitalfields Market which sells everything including food (and at great prices – but don’t forget to bargain with the market stall holders). There’s also Portobello in Notting Hill and those are just a few markets! For shopping, head to Oxford Street (and Regent Street for higher-end boutiques), or go to one of the many shopping centres in the suburbs. As for drinking, every corner has a traditional British pub (Camden is well-known for student haunts), there are clubs every night in the centre of the West End of London, and bars to spend the evening with friends. Those are just a few of the many things for students to do!
4. It’s a History Student’s Dream!
London is steeped in history. Trace the Great Fire of London from Pudding Lane, visit the Houses of Parliament, famed for Guy Fawkes’ trying to blow it up entirely! Visit Buckingham Palace, built during the Victorian era or head to the Tower of London to learn about the princes in the tower and other prisoners (who were hung or beheaded in the grounds). Those are just a few of the many landmarks but there are also lots of famous museums and art galleries, such as the Museum of London (situated at London Wall), the British Museum in Bloomsbury, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum to name a few. For art lovers, head to the Tate Modern or the Museum of Modern Art.
5. It’s a Gateway to the Rest of the UK and Beyond
With incredible transport links, via train, coach or plane, while in London, what’s stopping you exploring the rest of the United Kingdom? Take a train or plane to Scotland and learn more about Scottish history (and how Scotland came together with England after the death of Elizabeth 1st). Head West to Wales and discover this principality or go over by boat or plane to the Emerald Isle, Ireland. You can even get to France easily just by crossing over the channel (and there are many ways to do this). So while London is terrific, there’s a lot more to see during your Erasmus+ study placement.
